Welcome to Nursery

A warm and inviting centre for your child

Opened in 2009, we are Christchurch’s first exclusive Nursery, catering for children from 0 – 2 years. We are licensed for 16 children from 0 – 2 years and have 5 full time qualified teachers each day to provide support. We converted a beautiful villa in St Albans with the focus on providing space and fun within a warm home away from home. Our environment enables your child to discover and learn. The teaching team provides a caring, loving environment where cuddles, kind words and fun coupled with a warm and inviting spacious layout, offers your child the next best thing to home.

Our indoor environment is warm, spacious and friendly; we do not have high chairs but have low stools and tables enabling children to move freely and independently within the environment. Our Nursery has a separate sleep room to provide an area of rest for infants and toddlers. Children have individual free standing cots or stretchers so that the home environment is replicated as much as possible in our Nursery. Our equipment is imported from Italy and is made from beautiful timber of solid construction. We have specifically designed gym equipment for infants and toddlers promoting the development of essential motor skills that enhances movement, language and sensorial discovery. Our programme is based on fun, positive interactions and communication with young children as individuals and in small groups. As well as offering fundamental Montessori activities our programme encompasses music and movement, water and sand play, art and craft, story time and rhymes, puzzles and blocks.

Our outdoor environment is large and has a very homely feel with a large natural grass area, sandpit, climbing equipment including a slide, well developed trees and garden and has a large shade umbrella to provide protection from the sun.

Our focus is on the whole child. The choices of activities are carefully selected to provide interest, variety and the necessary learning experiences. Our programme fosters language, communication, coordination and fun, increasing the child’s social skills and awareness.

Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood)

While in my final year of study I became pregnant with my beautiful daughter Anahera, who is now two. I took one year off to spend at home with her and have been working here at the nursery since March 2014. I believe that children should be provided with a safe, loving and nurturing environment to grow and explore the surrounding materials. I look forward to getting to know your family.

Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood) Montessori Diploma, Certificate in Infant and Toddler Mental Health

I have a passion for infants and toddlers because I believe that they need respectful interactions and relationships through the first years of their lives. I believe in developing strong and positive relationship with the whānau, so that the child’s development and learning can occur through the home and centre setting. I look forward to building and maintaining strong relationships with the teaching team, you and your children and the community on my journey through my teaching career.

Diploma of Teaching ECE

Kia Ora, my name is Hayley and I am a full time teacher here at Learning Curves Montessori Nursery. I have always had a passion for children, so decided to become a nanny after finishing high school, from there I decided I wanted to be a teacher and do my training. In 2010 I began my career in early childhood where I commenced my studies towards becoming a qualified teacher. During this time I worked in both the nursery (0-2 years) and in the preschool room (2-3.5 years). In 2013 I graduated from the New Zealand College of Early Childhood with a Diploma in ECE. During my teacher training I had a number of placements at different centres around the wider Christchurch area. From these placements I really enjoyed being able to experience seeing the RIE/Pikler philosophy in everyday practice as well as aspects of primary caregiving. This sparked my interest and passion for children being in a learning environment that reflects this philosophy and approach. I believe the under two age group is such a critical time in a child’s development, as it’s the time where major milestones are reached and close attachments are formed. Being able to see a child develop and grow in such a short space of time particularly from 0-2 is very special for both teacher and child. I am very passionate about children being able to have learning experiences that allow them to explore the world around them, which enables them to build an understanding of the wider world. My passion for children continues outside of work time as I’m currently a volunteer for Plunket New Zealand, where I participate in and run playgroups, parent education classes ect. I am always looking to expand and further my knowledge around children and their development. I look forward to future learning opportunities that will enhance and grow my passion for infants and toddlers.

Bachelor of Education endorsed in ECE

Kia Ora, my name is Kerri-Anne and I am one of the teachers here at Learning Curves Montessori Nursery. I graduated from Otago University Teachers College with a Bachelor of Education endorsed in Early Childhood Education. I have recently returned from London where I lived for two years working as a nanny for a lovely family with two children. Before that I taught in a Montessori nursery for four years. I have found through my teaching and study that I have a passion for working with infants and toddlers and the importance of a great foundation of learning in the early years of the child. I believe that children thrive in a caring, nurturing, safe, and supportive environment where they can explore and develop their learning at their own pace. I believe that respect is a big part of working with children, respecting the childs choice, as well as respecting their family/whanau and other staff members. This includes developing repsonsive and reciprocal relationships with children and their family/whanau. When working with infants and toddlers I believe in encouraging their independence through structured and free play learning experiences. When I am not at work I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends, travelling and exploring new places, reading, baking, being in the outdoor environment, and watching movies. I look forward to getting to build strong relationships with you and your children, as well as the teaching team to provide the best care for your child."
